Spring/Summer 2017 Newsletter

ICDC Surrey have celebrated 10 years as a patient support group. We caught up with patients, friends and family on Saturday 10th June and all agreed that the group is still important and necessary. Thank you to everyone who organised the afternoon and to all who came along to show their support.
Looking forward, we would like to have more social events, in addition to our regular education day (usually in April/May). Social events need not be formal occasions, perhaps even meeting for drink in the pub, or fish and chips, or picking up the phone to have a chat.
In the past, the group was committee-driven but this has changed and we shouldn't rely on just Judi and Howard Linney and Duncan and Gay Reid to do all the work. As ICDC Surrey is not a registered charity, we are not bound by any formal reporting constraints, which means that we should do more on an informal basis. There is a small fund which could contribute to this, so don't be shy about coming forward with suggestions.
I will personally be asking some of our members to take this forward and I hope to report back on the next event very soon.
In the meantime, ICDC Surrey is pleased to promote HeartBeat Support Woking, which provides support and encouragement to all cardiac patients and their families at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals. Their next event is a BBQ on 7th July and more information can be found on their website
We also are very fortunate to have Sr Tracey Bradshaw and her Cardiomyopathy Support Group in the Trust. Their next meeting will be on Saturday 15th July 2pm in the Post Graduate Education Centre at St Peter's Hospital, and our ICDC Surrey members are welcome to attend.
To end, stay heart happy and healthy and keep in touch.

Education Day success for ICDC Surrey

A huge thank you to everyone who came along on Saturday.

Our wonderful volunteers (Judi, Duncan and their families) did a great job of making everyone feel welcome and providing refreshments.

Our fabulous St Peter's staff (Pat, Karen and Lisa) put on an excellent display of resuscitation skills.

Our terrific cardiac physiologists (Celso and Krissie) who work tirelessly behind the scenes for our ICD patients.

We introduced Dr Zhong Chen, Consultant Cardiac Electrophysiologist, and joke teller extraordinaire.

Please let me know if you would like a copy of Dr Chen's slides.

A special thank you to ICDC Surrey 'supporter of the decade' - Ian Clement from Biotronik UK. We really appreciate everyone giving up their time to share their experiences.

And last, but not least, thank you to our ICD patients, families and friends - we couldn't do it without you.

Please let me know if you would like information on any other aspects of your ICD and how we can improve our support for you. Get in touch by email, Twitter or Facebook, or leave a comment below.

Happy heart health!

Graham Skelding legacy to ICDC Surrey

We were delighted to be joined by Margaret Skelding, friends and staff on Tuesday 28 February to pay tribute to Graham Skelding, late Chair of ICDC Surrey. Graham's family and friends donated funds in his memory, and ICDC Surrey have added to this, to provide two new pacing couches to St Peter's Hospital. The Cardiology department, represented by Dr Ian Beeton, is very grateful for the donations and the continued support of ICDC Surrey. ICD patients benefit greatly from the service provided at St Peter's Hospital, and ICDC Surrey offers support to ICD patients across Surrey.

Note: ICDC Surrey is a patient support group. Our aim is to promote the health and wellbeing of patients in Surrey with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). We offer support for all patients in Surrey with ICDs, their partners, carers and families. We provide a mentoring service, to discuss our concerns and share experiences. We provide information and education relevant to ICD patients; including driving, medication, ICD technology, insurance, exercise and travel.

ICDC Surrey Education Day - Saturday 11 March

ICDC Surrey is pleased to announce the line up for this year's Education Day.

We will be introducing and welcoming the new St Peter's Hospital Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Dr Zhong Chen.

Dr Beeton, Consultant Cardiologist, will lead discussions on remote monitoring of ICDs, what happens after a shock, and how we help patients with ICDs, and their families, at the end of life.

We will have our very popular session on basic life support skills - everyone can have a go.

And finally, ask the Consultant anything!

The afternoon gets under way at 2pm and concludes around 4pm - depending on tea, cake and doughnuts :)

Please email to register.

There is no charge for this event, and no donations this year as ICDC Surrey has a healthy surplus of funds. If you have suggestions for how we can better support our ICD patients, please do let us know.

Volunteers are always welcome. Please speak to Judi Linney on the day.

Dear Members, Families, Carers, Friends and Colleagues

2016 has seen sadness and challenges for our patient support group. Graham Skelding passed away suddenly in February, and his passion for ICDC Surrey is sorely missed. Graham’s family have provided a legacy in his memory and, with ICDC Surrey support, the Pacing Department at St Peter’s Hospital will very shortly be the proud owners of two new state-of-the-art pacemaker couches. Thank you, Margaret, for keeping in touch and for your generosity.

Judi Linney has been ‘holding the fort’ as Chairperson in the meantime and Duncan Reid continues to keep the group’s finances in check, and we are grateful to both. However, in order to carry on our activities and to expand to all Surrey hospitals, we do need more volunteers.

ICDC Surrey hosted a very successful Education Day in April, attended by 50 patients and family members. This has become an annual event in our calendar. A 10 year celebration of ICDC Surrey is planned for early 2017.

We said farewell to Nicola Hutchison, who you may have met in Pacing Clinic at St Peter’s Hospital. Celso Camargo is the new Chief Physiologist. He has a wealth of
experience with pacing, ICDs and electrophysiology. Krissie Tewkesbury, now Krissie Potter (congratulations Krissie!) is the pacing clinic liaison for ICDC Surrey, and with her physiologist colleagues in other hospitals. Celso and Krissie are pictured above.

To our Physiologist colleagues from other Surrey hospitals – your patients are most welcome too. Please do get in touch.

And finally, ICDC Surrey has published a patient information booklet. Please feel free to ask for one at your next appointment. We are developing a new website but we are always updating our blog, Facebook page and Twitter feed, so there is no excuse for not staying in touch and up to date.

Happy heart health to you and yours,

Light Tames Lethal Heart Disorders in Mice and Virtual Humans

This news snippet was sent in by an ICD patient. It sounds excellent, and works for mice, although will be 5-10 years before human application. Until then.... keep eating the cheese!

On a serious note, defibrillator shocks very rarely damage heart tissue and are better than the alternative, a dangerous heart rhythm.
